09.21.10 Fall 2010 Tour on Hold…

Back in June, when I knew recording was coming up and tour was going to be starting up again, I started singing more, and rehearsing. It was then I started to notice my voice not holding up like it used to. It would also get soar and scratchy, even just from a night out talking amongst friends. I knew there was something wrong.

Almost immediately, the doctor knew something was off. She could tell just by the way I was talking. We did a scope, and bam. I wasn’t crazy; a polyp had formed on my vocal chord.

We decided to hold off on surgery, since it seemed like there was a good possibility to heal it with some vocal training and speech therapy.

A couple months into therapy, I saw another doctor, just to get a 2nd opinion. The news was great; the polyp was half the size it was in the original scope just a month and a half prior! Oh yeah…I was kicking this things butt.

I kept on with the vocal training and speech therapy, and began to mentally prepare for rehearsals and tour. Rehearsals would be the real test, since they are usually 3-4 hours long. The first rehearsal went great, my voice sounded awesome, no fatigue. The second rehearsal was not as successful. After about 2 hours, my voice completely started to go. It was weak, scratchy and cracking left and right. The next day, it was very hoarse and pretty soar. And then I had a melt down. “How will I ever get through tour when I can’t even make it through a rehearsal?”

My speech therapist suggested I come in and we do another scope since it had been a little over a month since the last one. There it was, the same polyp. It was also the same size as it was 3 months ago. Regardless of my technique, no matter how strong my breath, no matter how well my speech was, there was no getting around that there was a polyp there. I tried my best.

The next option was surgery. I immediately freaked out, cause I knew I was leaving in less than one week to make a record, followed by tour. I couldn’t cancel, everyone would shoot me.

I called my manager and filled him in. He immediately understood. I was immediately relieved. Canceling commitments, while not favorable, was an option.

What’s interesting to me is how set in my head I was about not being able to cancel upcoming commitments. Like I would be forced to go and do these things, even if I wasn’t capable. But then in one phone call, there was a way. And I want to thank my manager, label, and producers for being so patient and supportive through this time. They have all been incredible.
Health is first and foremost. If I’m going all the way to London to make a record, I want to be in tiptop shape. I don’t want to sing half ass. I don’t want to struggle through it, that’s no fun for anyone.

I don’t want to perform live for my fans without being able to give the best performance I can. So for now the tour is on hold, but I PROMISE the tour will be rescheduled.

I will be getting surgery now, and taking the next 3 months to properly heal.

Right now my voice is more like a rickety old appliance. You have to hold the cord this one weird way for it to work, and some days its works and some days it doesn’t.

So I’m sending her in, I’m getting her fixed. She’s going to come back so shiny and new, and purring better than ever!

It’s my gift to myself, and a gift to my fans.

And for anyone that ever had a song they loved, and then got to hear it live and it sounded 20 times better. This is for you too.

Thanks for your patience & understanding, and for your non-stop unconditional love & support.

I’ll be voiceless for a couple weeks, thank god for blogs, twitter and all things text and type. I should get me one of those speak n spells!

Love to my guys, and love to my girls,

Tristan

02.25.10 A Year of Rejuvenation

This past year Tristan has committed herself to keeping life simple.

In an interview with the San Diego News Network, Tristan explains why she needed to take a year off from the hectic world of the music industry and non-stop promo touring, “I’d been touring for five years straight and I’d done two records, so it was kind of like, ‘I need to step back. I want to be 26 and 27 and be like normal for a minute, and hang out with all my friends, check in with myself and figure out if I’m on the path I want to be on.’”

In her quest for normalcy, Tristan was able to visit both Bali and Burning Man, and spend even more time writing and surfing.

11.10.09 Tristan Prettyman Live @ The Belly Up Tavern - December 14th, 2009

Hi Everyone!!!!

Hope this finds you well!

Over the past year, I have taken time off to travel, live, experience, grow, think, take notes, thrive, breath, laugh, sing, love, hug and everything in between!

I’ve had an amazing time. Nourishing the self, following my path and uncovering the spirit that lives inside me.
I’ve made many great friends, shared sunsets over smiles, and have been turned on to so many different ways of life.
I feel like I am overflowing with love.

My travels have taken me everywhere from Bali to Burning man, England, Costa Rica, San Francisco, Yosemite, New York, Portugal.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to take so much time off. Taking a step away from the music, the business, the touring, etc..really allowed me to break out of the cycle of what my life has been like for the past 5 years…It also allowed me to get out of San Diego and see some other places, and actually get to explore and become parts of the communities, as opposed to just passing through while on tour.

When I returned home, I felt the same nervousness, excitement and feelings of anticipation as I did when I first set out on this mission :) (Nearly 10 years ago!!)
Once again, I am in love with music. I am so in love with what I do. Im not even sure how I got here, but Im glad I did. There is nothing more rewarding that doing what you love, and loving what you do.

My little sabbatical has come to an end, and I am now gearing up to start working on the next album, but before I do that, I wanted to give thanks. Im so grateful for where I am at right now. I wanted to share the love, my excitement and bring all my friends, family and our community together for a little holiday show :)

I will be playing at the Belly Up Tavern on Monday, December 14th, 2009 - 8pm
Tickets are on-sale now!
For more info, please visit: Belly Up Tavern

I wouldn’t be here without any of you. You have all contributed to this journey, and for that I am super blessed.

Thank you always for your continued support.

Hope to see you there!!!

Coming, going, always learning. All in love, love in all -

Hey Guys,

I am writing to see if I can enlist some of you guys that live in Denver and Minneapolis to help be part of my street team. We are looking to find 5 people in each city who could commit 2-3 hours a week (mostly on the weekends) to put up postcards, set posters up for display at stores (mostly coffee shops, clothing stores, and skate shops). Word of mouth is the best way to get the music out there, and you guys do such an amazing job with that as it is, I thought it couldn’t hurt to ask for your help :)

My record label would direct you where to go, what to do and basically help get you everything you need. All you would have to do is make the time, get out there and send in digital pics of your work. For that id love you forever and you also earn some reward points which you could use to buy stuff on cCST.com

If you are interested please send an email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Check out the American Songwriter Profile on Tristan Prettyman below!

“When the 26-year-old (in May) Prettyman was in sixth grade, her father taught her how to surf. (They lived in Del Mar, near San Diego.) And at 15, she took up her father’s old guitar. “He and my uncle used to play at my grandma’s house,? she recalls. Soon, she was writing and performing songs—-airily romantic tunes sung in an easy-going, casual alto that connoted a jauntily youthful optimism.”

“Tristan Prettyman is a renaissance woman of sorts. In addition to being the accomplished singer/songwriter that she is, Prettyman was also a model and surfer. Such experiences and more fuel the folk/pop sound from the San Diego, CA native and her second album Hello…x. Courtesy of the Virgin Records artist lounge, watch Prettyman perform a stirring acoustic set for UGO.”

04.14.08 New Record

Call me crazy but….

I have like 51,000 friends on this myspace thing. If 20% of those 51,000 people bought the new record this week. I could sell like 10,000 records in my first week. I remember when twentythree came out, i was psyched that i sold 2,000 the first week.

But…if i sold 10,000 records my first week, or more…this would send a huge message to my label and the industry, that what we got here, is something special, genuine, real. I think we can do it!!!!

So if you guys can, and have some extra dollars laying around, try to buy the record this week. itunes, your local record store, best buy, target, wherever they sell it. Doesn’t matter where you get it…

For every artist, the first week is huge. And though i dont need instant gratification, i know the longer it takes, the longer it will last, it would be pretty darn cool to achieve this goal.

So if you can get yourself a copy, your mom a copy, and tell 10 friends to buy a copy..i would love you, more than i already do…hard to believe thats even possible i know, and i would be forever greatful :)

This is where i put my hand out in front of me, and you all out your hands on mine, and we say go team, hut!, hike, 10-4, roger that….whoot whoot!

I am feeling much better, and off to Nashville, ill be in touch :)

Big smiles and thanks for the support and thank you to everyone who pre-ordered the record. Every little bit helps!

THE BAREFOOT WINE BEACH RESCUE PROJECT ™ IS BACK TO “HEEL? MORE BEACHES THIS SUMMER

Get ready to kick off your shoes and help “heel? a beach this summer. Between May and August 2008, the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation – a grassroots, non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches will embark on their second annual tour to help rescue, renew and restore four new beaches.

Each year, over 25,000 beaches in the United States are closed or posted as unhealthy. To help remedy this, local residents are encouraged to volunteer at cleanup and restoration events across the country to make these beaches “barefoot-friendly.? This year, hip-hop/blues musician G. Love and singer-songwriter and guitarist Tristan Prettyman will join volunteers on the beach and perform live at special celebrations that follow each beach rescue.

“Having grown up in San Diego, I spent most of my time at the beach and can’t imagine what life would be like without the surf and sand,? said Prettyman. “I’m excited to volunteer and share my music with people who take the time to give back to their communities.?

02.15.08 TRISTAN PRETTYMAN CONTRIBUTES TRACK

TRISTAN PRETTYMAN CONTRIBUTES TRACK FROM UPCOMING VIRGIN RECORDS ALBUM HELLO FOR USE IN DVD CREATED BY BONNEVILLE ENVIRONMENTAL FOUNDATION

FOR DONATING “WAR OUTTA PEACE,? ECO-MINDED SINGER/SONGWRITER RECEIVES 30 SOLAR “GREEN TAGS? FROM BEF TO OFFSET CO2 EMISSIONS

February 14, 2008 - New York - Singer-songwriter and guitarist Tristan Prettyman and Virgin Records have donated “War Outta Peace,? a track from Tristan’s upcoming album Hello, to the non-profit Bonneville Environmental Foundation [BEF], which has used it in a DVD demonstrating the benefits of renewable energy to the organization’s partners and supporters.

Virgin Records connected Tristan with the BEF, which sells carbon-offsetting renewable energy certificates, called Green Tags, to replace traditional polluting sources of electricity with clean, secure, and renewable sources of energy that come from solar and wind power from across North America.
For donating “War Outta Peace,? Prettyman will receive 30 Solar Green Tags from the BEF. Each Solar Green Tag represents one megawatt-hour of photovoltaic solar electricity and offsets approximately 1,295 pounds of CO2 emissions that would otherwise have been produced from electricity created from burning fossil fuels.

Prettyman’s contribution to the BEF was a no-brainer for the eco-minded artist, who supported enough solar energy certificates from the organization to offset energy consumed in the recording of Hello - the San Diego, Calif., native’s second album, which will be released by Virgin Records on April 15. The certificates for Hello offset approximately 38,000 pounds of CO2 emissions, the reduction equivalent of planting fives acres of trees or taking four cars off the road for one year.

“I was happy to donate my song to the Bonneville Environmental Foundation,? Prettyman says. “It’s just another way I can do my part for the environment.? Prettyman drives a Toyota Highlander Hybrid, is an avid recycler, and purchases biodegradable cleaning products for her home. “I also have a little composting pile in my backyard, use canvas bags at the grocery store, and try to buy as many organic and fair-trade-certified items as possible.?

“Madly,? the first single from Hello, went to radio last month and Prettyman has confirmed spring tours for February 14 to March 7 (supporting G. Love & Special Sauce) and a headline run from March 19 to April 27. She will also appear on Last Call with Carson Daly on March 18.

Konichiwa friends…I have a just returned from a 2 day press filled trip to Japan..It was great…If there is one reason why i know i am cut out for this job, its that i have been dealt the ‘no jet lag, hardly ever, no matter which directing im flying’ card. its pretty sweet. for some reason i just fall in and out and whatever time zone im in…i dont know how, or why, but it certainly makes things a heck of a lot easier. It also doesnt hurt that i forgot i had racked up over 200,000 frequent flyer miles and can use those for upgrades, cha ching…can we say business class, asleep so fast…I got to watch that movie Into the Wild, a film i had been meaning to see ever since it came out. I really enjoyed it…Eddie Vedder did a killer job with the soundtrack, i think its worth it just to go see it so you can listen to all the original songs he wrote for it. Japan is awesome, even if i was only there for 2 days…its still such a lovely, unique and fascinating place…the people are so sweet and they bought 150,000 copies of my last album, so that makes me love them even more ;) hehe…i hope this new album goes over just as well…fingers crossed. i love the food in japan, the sushi, and edamame bagels and the little chocolates..they also always put this gigantic fruit display in your room..i swear the one morning, this orange i peeled was the size of my head!Anyhow, i did enough interviews, photo shoots, video & radio performances to hold the people over for a couple months until i can get back there for tour in the spring. So now back…and feeling a little under the weather…i was feeling pretty good, having not had caught any sort of flu or cold in a while…but now i think the travel and the hustle and bustle of these last couple weeks are catching up to me…i really cant afford to get sick as i have a music video shoot tomorrow and then rehearsals starting sunday! Rehearsals you say? Ah yes for the upcoming tours..but first there will be a very special show coming up so….if you live in san diego or somewhere nearby..i am playing a private listening concert for 102.1 KPRI. They have always been a big supporter of me and also when it comes supporting their local talent…——————————————————————————————————————————————————KPRi-LIVE WITH TRISTAN PRETTYMAN at VALLEY VIEW CASINO Experience the thrill of the all new Valley View Casino with exciting gaming, delicious dining and live entertainment.
